Iceland Road to Russia FIFA World Cup 2018

The Nordic island nation of Europe that has not yet appeared FIFA world Cup is Iceland. The official FIFA ranking of Iceland is 22.Iceland is going to make its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in FIFA World Cup 2018 hosted by Russia. Since FIFA World Cup 2018 will be the first FIFA World Cup for Iceland we don’t have any FIFA World Cup history for the country. The football association for Iceland was formed in 1947.The present president of the association is Mr. Gundi Bergsson. In 1954 the entry of Iceland was denied by FIFA since then Iceland has been trying to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. After 64 years of trying to get qualified Iceland has finally qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2018 to Russia.

World Cup Qualifier Europe

The World Cup qualifier in Europe selects 14 countries for the FIFA World Cup and for 2018 FIFA World cup Russia qualifies being a host country. 52 countries who are the members of FIFA from Europe go for the preliminary competition where those 52 countries are divided into 9 groups in which 7 groups contain 6 teams and rest of the two groups contains only 5 teams. EnglandFrance, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain are placed in a group containing 6 teams. Winners from each group qualify automatically and the eight best runners-up go for the playoffs from which 4 teams are selected. Thus, in this way, the Europe qualifier selects 14 nations for the FIFA World Cup.

Iceland ended the European qualifier by leading the group I. In a total of ten games played Iceland won seven of them with 2 losses and one draw. Iceland lost against Finland and Croatia during the qualifier round of Europe. The best performance of Iceland during the qualifier round was against Turkey where Iceland managed to win with the final score of 0-3. Leaving Croatia in the second position of the table Iceland ended leading the table and qualified for FIFA World Cup 2018.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Group D

The final draw of FIFA World Cup 2018 has placed Iceland in Group D where Iceland has to play against Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria and qualify for the Knockout stage into the round of Sixteen’s.

  • Argentina – Iceland (Saturday,16 June)
  • Nigeria – Iceland (Friday, 22 June)
  • Iceland – Croatia (Wednesday, 27 June)
