Colombia Road to Russia FIFA World Cup 2018

The South American nation Colombia, currently ranked 13th in the FIFA World Rankings. Colombia has managed to appear 6 times in a FIFA World Cup, including 2018 World Cup hosting by Russia. Colombia was selected to play this prestigious tournament in the year 1962, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2014. Colombia had its strongest period during the 1990s.Colombia is known for having a passionate fan base. In 1990, Cameroon won the game 2-1 in extra time, thereby eliminating Colombia. In 1994 FIFA World Cup, Colombia finished top of the table in their group without having a single match lost included a historic and memorable 5-0 win over Argentina, which began a special mutual respect rivalry between both countries. In 1998 FIFA World Cup, Colombia was assigned to group G with the nations England, Romania and Tunisia. During the tournament, Colombia only earned one win against Tunisia and suffered two losses against England and Romania, which eliminate them in the group stage. In 2002 FIFA World Cup, Colombia failing to qualify due to goal difference against Uruguay and  Colombia did not qualify for FIFA World Cup 2006 and 2010.In 2014 FIFA World Cup, Colombia fell to host nation Brazil 2-1 in the Quarter-final round, having James Rodriguez as the World Cup’s leading goal scorer and Juan Cuadrado as an assist leader.

World Cup Qualifier South America

Colombia played a total of 18 games for their Qualifying round in South America with a total of 27 points on the table conceding 7 wins 6 draws and 5 losses. Colombia drew 1- 1 against Peru in the first round of World Cup qualifier and defeated 1-2 against Paraguay in the second round. In the third round, Colombia again drew   1-1 against Brazil and again in fourth round they consecutively drew 0-0 against Venezuela. Colombia earned six points after back to back victory over 0-2 over Ecuador and 1-0 against Bolivia. But in the seventh round, Colombia defeated 3-0 against rivalry nation Argentina. Colombia drew 0-0 against Chile and 2-2 against Uruguay in 8th and 9th round respectively. In 10th round Colombia win 0- over Paraguay and defeated 2-1 against Brazil in the 11th round of World Cup qualifying. Then Colombia won back to back three matches 2-0 against Venezuela, 3-1 against Ecuador and 2-3 against Bolivia, in 12th, 13th, and 14th round of World Cup qualifying round respectively. Again Colombia loses 0-1 against Argentina in the 15th round and drew 1-1 against Chile in the 16th round. In the 17th round of World Cup qualifying Colombia loses 3-0 against Uruguay and at last round of World Cup qualifying match Colombian team managed to score a brace against Peru and qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2018, Russia.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Group H

The final draw of FIFA World Cup 2018 has placed Colombia in Group H where Colombia has to play against Poland, Senegal and Japan and qualify for the knockout stage into the round of sixteen’s.
