“Hard Work pays off” what better example could be for the statement than this American musician, actress and filmmaker Brie Larson, who was a mere background actor but at present is gradually rising to grab the A-list status in Hollywood.

Born in Sacramento, California on 1 October 1989, Brianne Sidone Desaulniers is the first daughter of Heather and Sylvain Desaulniers. After the divorce of her parents, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles. She was the youngest student accepted at the American Conservatory Theatre and studied drama since she was 6. She took her professional name as Brie Larson from an American doll named Kristen Larson which she received as a child.

Career

In Music

Larson is known in the music industry as a musician, songwriter as well as a singer. Her first song “Go Goodbye” and “Invisible Girl” were posted on her personal website, which led her to sign a record deal with Universal Records when she was just 13.

In the following years, she sang songs like “Not a Freak”, “She said” and “Hope has Wings” which was included in her first and only released album Finally Out of P.E. (2005). In 2006 she recorded a soundtrack for the movie Hoot and also performed acoustic songs such as “Dear Universe”, “Powershift”, “Stilts and the Titanic”, “Close to Fine” and many more at L.A.’s famous Viper Room.

The second album of Brie was produced and completed but sadly was never released also, she planned to release an Extended Play but that too was not made public. In 2010 she performed “Black Sheep” with the Metric band for the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World which is marked as her last public appearance as a singer as of yet.

In Acting

 Brie was first seen in shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno performing with sketches, Touched by an Angel and Popular. She then acted in Raising Dad (2001), a new show of The WB, which was her first TV series where she acted for 22 episodes. After that, she acted on a number of TV shows where she had minor roles such as Ghost Whisperer (2008), United States of Tara (2009-11) as Kate for which she was critically acclaimed, The League (2011), Kroll Snow (2013), Community (2014) and Comedy Bang! Bang! (2015).

 

Larson stepped on the film industry with the Disney channel original movie Right on Track in 2003 as Courtney Enders. Subsequently, in the following year she acted on Sleepover and 13 going on 30. She also appeared in movies like Madison (2005), Hoot (2006), Remember the Daze (2008), Just Peck (2009), and Tanner Hall (2009). Though all these movies could not do well at the box office, the acting skills of Brie were critically praised.

In 2010 she showed her acting and singing abilities on the movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World. She was also seen in supporting roles in the movies Rampart (2011), 21 Jump Street (2012), The Trouble with Bliss (2012) consequently her career took a major turn around with her performance as Grace Howard in the 2013 indie short film Short Term 12. The movie was a success due to its story and the performance of Larson.  Since then she gave many successful films like The Spectacular Now (2013), The Gambler (2014), Digging for Fire (2015) and Trainwreck (2015).

The breakthrough role of Brie was marked by the movie Room (2015), adapted from the novel by Emma Donoghue, where she appeared as Joy Newsome. The movie grossed over $36 million out of a $13 million budget and her soulful performance was universally admired giving her the push in her career that she had been hoping for all these years. In 2016, she acted on King Kong: Skull Island alongside Tom Hiddleston, which was one of the highest grossing movies of that year.

Recently in 2017, she has performed in an American biographical drama film The Glass Castle, a comedy film Unicorn Store, which is also her directorial debut and a romantic comedy movie Basmati Blues where she was immensely admired for her work.

Moreover, Larson has written and directed short films such as Weighting (2011) and The Arm (2012). She is also an advocate for sexual assault victims and she speaks strongly about it in her interviews.

Upcoming Projects

Larson is an extremely agile performer and The Marvels Cinematic Universe has recognized it and has signed her for their first female Superhero movie Captain Marvel as Carol Danvers/ Captain Marvel in 2019. She will also play the same character with her iconic red, blue and gold superhero costume in another Marvel’s movie Avengers: Infinity War which is set to release in 2018. Likewise, she is confirmed to play the lead character in the movie Victoria Woodhull which is to be produced by Brie herself and Amazon Studios.

 

Personal Life

Brie originally belongs to the French-Canadian background and shares a rough relationship with her father.  She resides in Los Angeles, USA and enjoys eating lasagna.  As far as her love life is concerned, she has dated actor Cody Linley and John Patrick Amedori. Currently, she is in a relationship with an American musician, actor and record producer Alex Greenwald. They confirmed the reports of their engagement in 2016 after being together for three years. She also is interested in designing her own clothes and enjoys watching football as well.

As a musician and singer, Brie’s song “She Said” was the 99th best-selling CD single in America in 2005 and it was on the 31st position on the Billboard Hot 100 Single sales.

As an actress, Larson has been nominated and won several awards mainly for her movie Short Term 12 and Room. In 2013, she received Best Actress Award from the Austin Film Critics Association and Black Film Critics Circle for her movie Short Term 12. She also received Best Actress and Breakthrough Performance Award from Detroit Film Critics Society in 2013.
